NURHI commissions 19th FP facility in Lagos clinic

● More hospitals to benefit

In a bid to reduce maternal mortality in Lagos State, the Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI), on Monday July 23, commissioned another post-pregnancy Family Planning (PPFP) unit in Dafe Medical Centre, a private hospital in Ketu, a Lagos suburb in Kosofe Local Government Area.

It is the 19th medical facility to benefit from the NURHI initiative in the state.

Speaking to journalists at the commissioning of the facility at the Ketu hospital, NURHI technical lead, PPFP, Dr Taiwo Johnson disclosed that the organisation would be extending the gesture to other facilities and expand the number to 40 before September while targeting a total of 200 facilities by the year end.

On how the facilities were chosen, Dr. Johnson said the planning was done with the coordination of Lagos state government, particularly in the area of generating data which is usually at the disposal of government, adding that there must be willingness to work with them together with essential prerequisites like being registered, having the prescribed standard, and being accessible to community women.

The government, she further said, also gives commodities at the basic minimum price in order to sustain the supply of affordable commodities.

“Training is involved apart from the basic equipment we donate, we will be training the staff of the facilities we are using and particularly, we will train a provider in each facility that will take care of the demands generated.”

Dr Johnson also disclosed that NURHI is raising awareness for family planning services, do a 72 hour makeup to fill the vacuum created in public and government facilities, and also address family planning standard in Lagos at post pregnancy, antenatal and immunization centres in Lagos state.

She called on the management of Dafe Medical Centre to ensure that the equipment is used for the purpose of family planning and assured them it is theirs after the donation.

While launching the equipment, Dr Odjegoro Ofaye, the Medical Director of Dafe Medical Centre thanked PPFP for their initiative and promised to live up to expectation.

Dr Ofaye said the centre is poised to deliver having created the enabling environment by providing a consultation room for the sole purpose of family planning and called on residents within the environs to take advantage of the equipment and services.
